Christian Shirts Throughout History

Brandon

In the grand scheme of things, Christian t-shirts are a pretty recent development. But already, they're a massive industry. They're everywhere. They're sold alongside Bibles and crosses in bookstores. They're seen on pop celebrities. It's hard to go a week without seeing one (especially if you go to church).

What if these shirts had existed thousands of years ago? What impact would they have made on history? My guess is: quite a bit of impact. Here's some speculation on exactly what that impact would be.

The Easy Button

Remember that Staples ad campaign for the easy button? It's a button that makes everything easier? That campaign inspired this Christian t-shirt:

Jesus button. Life's problems - one solution. It's just that easy.

Jesus can make everything easier too! It's as simple as pressing the Jesus button. Imagine what an impact this inspirational shirt would have had on the early Christians!

Getting eaten by lions is easier!

Getting shot with arrows is easier!

Getting crucified upside-down is easier!

Wipe those grimaces off of your faces, boys! Just push the Jesus button! In that first picture, the lion is actually pushing the button for poor Ignatius. How easy is that?

MySpace in Heaven

If you don't know about MySpace, you have no business being on the Internet. It's a social networking site that's wildly popular with the younger crowd, and mildly popular for the older crowd as well. The popularity of MySpace has inspired this shirt:

Jesus died for My Space in Heaven

I've used MySpace. And let me tell you—I can't wait for Heaven.

Welcome to Heaven. Please support your Lord by clicking some banners.

The Obligatory "You're Going to Hell"

First, a little disclaimer: not all Christians are people who would rather tell you you're going to Hell than help you out with something. I'll even go as far as to say that most of us aren't that way. But some of us are. Those people probably wear shirts like this one:

Don't believe in hell? It's still there. You're still going.

A little extreme, yes. But think how a message like that would have straightened out some of these heretics:

No one remembers you when he is dead. Who praises you from the grave? - Psalm 6:5

As a cloud vanishes and is gone, so he who goes down to the grave does not return. He will never come to his house again; his place will know him no more. - Job 7:9-10

That shirt would have put the fear of God back into them!
